A photo-shoot creating packshots and closeups of this gin brand’s entire range.
After discussions on social media Luke and Jess Pentith from Whitby Distillery sent across their wonderful range for me to capture. What I really love about these products are the design of the bottle and the brand identity, plus it all comes from one of my favourite towns, Whitby; just a short drive from my home town.
It was during a camping trip to the Outer Hebrides, where the pair were inspired by the islands’ artisan gin-makers to start their very own distillery.

One of the most unique elements of the bottle as captured in this close-up shot, is the shaping of the base to replicate an ammonite. Whitby is situated on an area of the Yorkshire coast renowned for fossils. The rest of the textured bottle providing a nod to the sea.
It’s a time-consuming project when capturing lots of packshots, getting the lighting and positioning just right. Setting up each light individually until the desired results are achieved. With much of the time spent on the initial setup, then going through replicating the shots. Each bottle sat atop a piece of white perspex to include a reflection to the base.
To keep things efficient I use a studio camera stand, and the industry standard software packages before going through to retouching where dust and other distracting elements are removed.
All these close-ups were produced to have maximum depth of field to allow the viewer to see all details in perfect clarity. Situated by Whitby’s world-famous abbey with echoes of Bram Stoker’s epic Dracula, you can take a distillery tour and take it all in.
